Should emergency management be defined as a field or a profession? This is an age-old question, and one that Dr. Thomas D. Phelan and I discuss in this week’s episode of The Crisis Intelligence Podcast.

While discussing this issue, we explore how theory and practice can be combined within the classroom to provide students with the best skill-set possible as emergency managers – including those with zero tactical experience.

We also explore the emergence of new technology for emergency management and how it is presenting a drastic change and challenges – as well as great opportunities – within this field. In fact, today so much of what is available to emergency managers to help them better do their job is digital. From mapping, to communicating, tracing developments of epidemics, reverse 911 – you name it. On the other hand, how can emergency managers combat information overload?

Within this podcast, Dr. Tom and I also explore how cities, such as the city of New York, is taking on new practices within the school system to teach emergency preparedness to students – and their strategic plan for taking that education to the parents, in different languages.
